Graham Altham-Lewis

Graham is the Director of Learning and Teaching Innovation, a Mathematics Teacher, Advisor, Mutual Respect Facilitator and Tennis Coach at Appleby. Graham is originally from the UK where he obtained his undergraduate degree and teaching qualifications. He has taught mathematics and statistics in a variety of educational systems and countries for 21 years in independent schools, state schools, and briefly at a post-secondary community college in Ontario before joining Appleby.

Obtaining his masters in Applied Statistics in 2009 his dissertation investigated the factors of motivation of students in an Ontario Community College. Graham has taught mathematics and English in the UK, mathematics and trumpet in the UAE, where he was chair of subject leaders, and currently teaches mathematics at Appleby. In his current role he assists the school in continuing professional development both as a mentor to individual teachers, and as a facilitator for whole school professional development. He is also an avid supporter of Manchester United Football Club.

He is an exceptional teacher who delivers great classes while exhibiting a strong ethos of caring in his teaching, advising and coaching. He is well regarded by students and colleagues and last year won a teaching award. We are nominating him because, while he shows these attributes of great teaching, he is also a force at the school in bringing innovative and challenging ideas to the table. He has the ability to imagine different approaches for the future, ask provocative questions constructively, and think beyond his own discipline, while also being informed by significant experiences in the UK, UAE, and Canada. We believe that Graham would be a superb contributor to Project 2051 because of this blend of characteristics – strong practitioner, great collaborator, creative thinker.


Stephen Anthony

Head of Senior School

Stephen taught at the American Foundation School in Mexico and returned to Canada to put his experience and Masters of Education into practice – he has made WPGA his life’s work. He is described as a genuine connector warmly engaging with students of all ages, faculty and parents to purposefully foster a vibrant and unique school culture.

During his tenure he has served to create, develop, implement and steward numerous key programs and organizational systems across all levels of the school. He has both taught and held many positions of responsibility such that he is keenly in tune with the inner workings of all areas of a highly successful independent school. With 14 years as Head of the Senior School, he also has 12 years’ experience on the Board of Directors, chaired Risk Management and Educational Technology task forces, provided oversight for timetabling, website creation, student support, programming, headed the Mathematics and Experiential Education departments, and participated on committees for Strategic Planning, Buildings & Grounds, Communications, Governance, Admissions, Staffing, Accreditation and Advancement.

A school and community coach, an outdoor education and international service trip leader and a master teacher, Stephen is eminently skilled in understanding and guiding young people.



Lori Binder

Associate Head

Lori Binder is the Associate Head of School at Gray Academy of Jewish Education, a JK-Gr. 12 Jewish Community Day School in Winnipeg. Lori began her career with the school as a teacher, curriculum coordinator and then served as Vice Principal for a decade. After completing both CAIS's Next Step Leadership program and most recently the 15-month Day School Leadership Training Institute (DSLTI) in NYC for aspiring Heads of School, Lori took on the role of Associate Head of School. In this role Lori works closely with the Winnipeg Board of Jewish Education on its next Strategic Plan, is continuing to develop strategies for admissions and retention as well as enhancements to further build the capacity for innovations in teaching and learning at Gray Academy. One of the unique projects that Lori had the opportunity to grow is Gray Academy's International Student Program from both a business and educational model and is currently working with the board on Financial sustainability. Outside of work Lori spent the last ten years serving on the board of a non-profit arts organization in the community, the Chai Folk Arts Council. In this role Lori served on various executive roles, including President of the board, gaining first-hand experience in governance, fundraising and strategic planning. She was the chair of their 50th anniversary and spent 18 months developing a strategy for this milestone and executing a successful quarter of a million dollar campaign. Lori was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba and holds an M-Ed in Administration and Supervision.

Laura Brock

Laura began her teaching career as a high school history teacher, house parent and House Director at King’s Edgehill School, her alma mater. She currently works at the Halifax Grammar School, a small K-12 independent school with a reputation for academic excellence, and has been there for 20 years.

For the past 13 years, Laura has been the IB Diploma Coordinator and University & Academic Counselor at HGS. In addition to these roles, she teaches IB History SL and Geography HL. As Social Studies Curriculum Leader, Laura oversees the curriculum development for grades 5 through 12. She also sits on the Technology and Professional Development Committees. Additionally, Laura leads several co- and extra- curricular activities, including the Duke of Edinburgh program, Habitat for Humanity service trips and the Model United Nation club. Prior to teaching in the Senior School, Laura taught Middle School history and geography, developing each of these curricula and their respective writing programs.

Laura is a member of the IB educator’s network, leading face-to-face and online workshops in Coordination, Administration, Counseling and Geography. She recently completed training in Approaches to Teaching and Learning, a new requirement for the Diploma program and will now lead workshops in this area. More importantly, she will also work with faculty to help them integrate ATL in their classrooms.

Laura has an undergraduate degree in History & English from Dalhousie University, a Bachelor of Education from Acadia University and a Master of Arts in History from Saint Mary’s University.



Jon Butcher

In his 25th year of teaching mostly physics and science, Jon is a technology and pedagogy explorer with a bent for things that actually work. Implementing a fully online course in the mid 90’s using BBS, he’s never been without a computer in the classroom. Chair of SAC’s IT Integration committee throughout the 2002 implementation of our one-to-one laptop, and 2009 pen-enabled tablet programs (what are you missing if your computer has no pen? :-), he believes that empowerment and creativity are the keys to technological and pedagogical success. Closely involved in the evolution and implementation of our Edsby LMS over the past 3 years, his latest challenge is trying to bring the same creative mindset to the administrative side of an independent school as we search for ways to improve curriculum and delivery within the constraints of a credit-based, bricks & mortar system - or not? The singularity is coming…

Deborah Cook

Debbie has spent most of her adult life teaching and leading in international schools in Asia. She began her career as a third grade teacher in the Philippines at the International School of Manila. It was there that she discovered her passion for curriculum and instruction, particularly in culturally diverse learning environments where beliefs and practices about education often diverge. She returned to North America to pursue graduate studies in curriculum development and special education and joined the faculty at Washington State University where she worked to develop inclusive practices.

A return to Asia then gave Debbie the opportunity to implement inquiry driven curriculum models in schools in the Philippines, Myanmar, and most recently Singapore at United World College. Debbie’s professional growth has been greatly influenced by the communities in which she has lived. Working with colleagues around the world, Debbie co-founded T2T in 2012, an initiative in which international teachers work alongside colleagues in Cambodia and Myanmar who teach in challenging circumstances.



Glen Downey

Glen Downey is an award-winning children’s author, graphic novelist, reviewer, and the Chair of English and Drama at The York School in Toronto. He is also the founder of Comics in Education www.comicsineducation.com, a website dedicated to the use of visual narrative in the K-12 curriculum. Glen has written nearly a hundred books for young people across a variety of genres including graphic novels and theme-based classroom books aimed at reluctant readers. He was writer and series editor for Graphic Poetry, winner of the 2010 Textbook Excellence Award from the Text and Academic Authors Association, and the 2011 Teachers Choice Award for Children’s Books from Learning Magazine. Since 2003, he has written for Rubicon Publishing in Oakville, authoring titles for award-winning series such as Boldprint, The 10, Boldprint Graphic Readers and Graphic Novels, Interface, Remix, and Issues 21. His works have been distributed by Scholastic, Oxford, Harcourt, Pearson, Brightpoint Literacy, and Althouse Press. In addition, Dr. Downey is a regular reviewer for PW Comics World, the graphic novel division of Publishers Weekly, and serves as a judge on the annual Critics’ Poll that chooses the Graphic Novel of the Year. His reviews have also appeared in The Globe and Mail and The Beat: The News Blog of Comics Culture. In addition, he serves as a writer and editor for the Sequart Research and Literacy Organization in the US, a group devoted to advancing comics as an art form.

Andrea Fanjoy

Andrea Fanjoy is Assistant Head, Academics at KCS. Prior to KCS, she worked at the Toronto and the former Ottawa District School Boards, at an independent Montessori school, and in Japanese high schools. She has taught students from kindergarten to grade 12 in French, English, history, geography, science, art and math. School culture, organizational learning, student and faculty leadership, 21st century skills, project-based learning, passion-based learning, service learning and technology are all topics of particular interest in her efforts to realise a best-possible school experience for students.



Heather Friesen

Heather Friesen is Head, Academics at Branksome Hall, an independent day and boarding school for girls in downtown Toronto, Canada, where she oversees teaching and learning from JK- Grade 12 and teacher professional development. As a science educator, Heather has taught Grades 7-12, including IB Higher and Standard Level Biology, MYP Sciences, AP Biology and was a recipient of the Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Teaching Mathematics, Science and Technology. She has been a Department Head, MYP Coordinator and Head of Middle School, and has engaged with the IB as an MYP workshop leader for Sciences and Heads of School/Coordinators, and as an Assistant Examiner for HL Biology. Heather has authored several teachers’ guides and oversaw the development of programs to support the Ontario science and language arts curriculum for Ontario’s public broadcaster, TVOntario. She has been a workshop facilitator with several organizations, including the IB, TVOntario, Triple A Online Professional Learning, and was the video host for the Ontario Ministry of Education’s Science Assessment Exemplars Project.

Kimberley Harvey

Kimberley Harvey is the Director of Senior School at York House School, an independent school for girls, located in the heart of Vancouver. Kimberley has worked in all girls’ learning environments for the last twenty years and has also volunteered with organizations, like CARE Canada, on Vancouver’s I am Powerful Council, to educate young people today on the importance of investing in women and girls around the world. Her true passions lie in empowering and inspiring young women to be leaders who want to make meaningful, ethical and transformational contributions to the world around them.

Kimberley began her career at Havergal College, where she was an English teacher in the Middle and Senior School, Guidance Counsellor, House Advisor and led many Professional Development opportunities on how girls learn for faculty, both within the school and internationally. She started a partnership with OISE for teacher placements while at Havergal and oversaw this program until she moved west for her current role.

As Director of Senior School at YHS, Kimberley has the overall responsibility for leading and managing day to day operations of the Senior School (Grades 8 to 12). She provides leadership and works collaboratively with all stakeholders to foster a strong, supportive and connected school. Initiating PLCs, both at Havergal and now at YHS, Kimberley continues to share her own love of learning with her colleagues. With a recent Masters in Administration and Educational Leadership, Kimberley is an asset in helping YHS move forward in developing a 21st century learning environment.




Christianna Hiles

Curriculum Leader - Secondary School

Christianna is Bermudian who was raised partly in UK and has taught both in the UK and Bermuda. She is currently Saltus’ Curriculum Leader and a member of the Secondary Department Leadership Team. This role involves working with the various middle managers and department heads in the school as well as liaising with the school’s primary department to ensure consistency in teaching and learning.

Saltus is a high achieving co-educational, independent day school educating students between the ages of 4 and 18. It is the premier independent school in Bermuda and enjoys an excellent reputation in the international community. The school is located in the capital of Bermuda, Hamilton. It is an accredited member of CAIS. The international curriculum blends the best of both British and American traditions. Saltus offers a fully differentiated curriculum to a broad range of ability. The school has also invested substantially in information technology.. Results in the PSAT, SAT, AP and IGCSE (following Cambridge Edexcel and AQA syllabuses) are excellent. IGCSE results for the past 5 years were particularly outstanding with 100% of students achieving success in the IGCSE examinations.

During her time at Saltus Christianna has held a variety of positions: Head of English, Media Studies and Drama, Debating and Public Speaking Coordinator and more recently Curriculum Leader. She has also worked very closely with the national Bermuda debate team coaching and managing teams who have traveled to places including Peru, South Africa, Qatar and the Czech Republic. She has coached teams for a wide range of debating and public speaking tournaments and hosted a number of school and national events in this area.

Christianna has been interested in the impact of motivation on learning for the majority of her career. This prompted her to complete a Masters degree in Education and Special Needs from the University of Exeter in 2007 and then to compliment this qualification and become a Specialist of Special Education, earning this qualification from the University of Ontario Institute of Technology. She continually seeks to continue her own education and learning and is currently completing the National Professional Qualification for Senior Leadership from the National College in London.

In true keeping of the stereotype of all English teachers one of her favourite out of school hobbies is reading and keeping abreast of the news. She does however also enjoy salsa and tango dancing as well as running though her proficiency in all of these activities is rather dubious.


Trevor Julian

Ian Kennedy

Ian Kennedy is the Head of Collingwood School's Wentworth campus. Previously, he was the Director of Instruction at Collingwood and an administrator in the West Vancouver public school system. He received his Bachelor of Education from the University of Victoria and his Masters of Education in Curriculum and Instruction (focusing on leadership), from Simon Fraser University. Ian also completed a certificate in School Leadership from the BC Educational Leadership Council.

Ian has been teaching since 1993. He has taught a variety of science, physical education and student leadership courses and has always been passionately involved in coaching and co-curricular activities. Ian has taught at Collingwood and Shawnigan Lake School and served as a Vice Principal at both West Vancouver Secondary and Rockridge Secondary. In this capacity, he was Chair of the West Vancouver Administrators Professional Development Committee and has facilitated and led a number of workshops for Principals and Teachers. Ian is a CAIS Leadership Institute Faculty member and CAIS National Forum facilitator. He was part of the CAIS standard review task force and was an advisory member of the Inspiring Excellence committee. He has presented at a number of conferences and workshops including the CAIS Best Practices Conference, the CAIS National Forum, provincial workshops and has been part of three CAIS Accreditation Teams.

Ian is a passionate educational leader who is known for his collaborative and focused approach to teacher development and school improvement. Ian is the proud father of two lovely daughters - Mckinley (13) and Riley (11).


Denise Lamarche

Denise Lamarche is currently the Director of Academics at St. Michaels University School in Victoria. With a passion for collaborative and innovative learning, she is inspired by the educators and students she has worked with who strive for excellence in the learning journey. She completed her Bachelors of Education at McGill University in Physical Education, her Masters of Arts in Leadership at Royal Roads University and has been teaching in CAIS schools for the past 18 years. Current primary responsibilities include leading and overseeing the academic program K-12; leading professional growth and development of faculty; overseeing the integration and innovation of technology across the academic program. Previously, Denise taught at Crofton House School in Vancouver for 8 years where her roles included Assistant Director of Student Services, a one-year Director of Senior School maternity cover, and University Guidance Counsellor. Before that, Denise was at Collingwood School in West Vancouver where her roles there included University Guidance, Academic Advisor and French teacher for grades 6-9.




Patti MacDonald

Principal, Junior School

Patti MacDonald is the Principal of the Junior School at The Bishop Strachan School in Toronto. Before coming to BSS in 2007, she taught at The School at Columbia University in New York. Patti was a member of the founding faculty of this unique university affiliated school, teaching the inaugural Grade 2 class and then moving to the position of Grade 6 math teacher. While at TSCU, she transitioned into a leadership role and was involved with curriculum development, student assessment planning and teacher evaluation. She also coordinated the associate teacher mentoring program, student teachers and research. While in New York, Patti also acted as the educational consultant for the new independent school, Harlem Academy and facilitated the elementary education group at the Klingenstein Summer Institute, part of the Klingenstein Centre for Independent School Leadership at Teachers College, Columbia. Before moving to TSCU, Patti taught at the Institute for Child Study at the University of Toronto (OISE). At ICS, Patti taught Junior Kindergarten, first and second grade as well as contributing to research initiatives and the teacher education program. Patti's previous experience includes teaching Junior Kindergarten through eighth grade in Ontario public schools and teaching 18 month to 5 year olds at the Glendon Day Nursery at Glendon College, York University. With a passion for the early years, Patti developed the inaugural Junior Kindergarten program in Wentworth County.


Gillian Martin

Gillian was raised as a “Faculty Brat” at Ridley College, and comes by the independent school lifestyle honestly, having grown up, lived and worked among independent school students, faculty and families throughout her life. Upon her graduation from Queen’s Faculty of Education, Gillian spent her first year of teaching as part of a four-member founding Faculty of a school in Kingston, Ontario, working collaboratively with two Queen’s University Faculty of Education professors, and one other eager new teacher, to develop the vision, mission, curriculum and day to day operations of a new private school for Eastern Ontario. Gillian next moved to Trafalgar Castle School, in Whitby, Ontario, where she spent the next 12 years as a Residential Faculty member, English Teacher and Department Head, and finally as the Vice Principal, School Life. In 2013, Gillian joined the Faculty at Havergal College as the Assistant Head, Senior School, where she continues her work with student leadership, co-curricular programming, school culture and progressive discipline. Never a dull moment when your focus is on student life!

Areas of particular interest for Gillian include development and selection of student leadership, with a focus on “the leader as learner” mentality, student engagement with an eye to mental and physical health and happiness, and experiential education. Gillian is also learning from her Havergal colleagues as they guide our Faculty in current research into best practice in the classroom and the school community at large, including the Harkness method, Non-Violent Communication, and Cultures of Thinking.




David McCarthy

After graduating in sciences at the University of Cambridge in 1979 went on to do a Post Grad Certificate in Education at Manchester University. Teaching for 7 years in the UK at two different schools then joined Brentwood College Faculty in 1987. Taught biology and chemistry here while house parenting for nearly 20 years. Took a year’s sabbatical and a term at St Andrtews University Scotland as a North American Teacher Fellow. The past 8 years I have been Director of Academics at Brentwood. My role has included working with the ISABC on their ProD committee.


Paul McLellan

Assistant Head, Director of Senior School
Rothesay Netherwood School

Paul is a senior member of our leadership team and has been a teacher at RNS School for the past seventeen years, teaching primarily in our mathematics department. He loves teaching and learning, and has taught courses at all grade levels, including Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate. Paul graduated from Saint Francis Xavier University with a B.Sc. in Mathematics and Chemistry and a B.Ed. Later, he earned a M.Ed. in Educational Leadership from the University of New Brunswick and is a graduate of the CAIS Leadership Program.

Paul’s recent focus has been building a team at RNS that is committed to raising the standards for teaching and learning in our school and, more importantly, influencing best practice in the region. Some notable accomplishments in his resume would include introducing us to the IB Diploma Program, forming a partnership with the University of New Brunswick to establish our annual Learn2Learn Conference, creating a learning innovation team, forming a partnership with EdTech to bring the first Atlantic Canada Global Summit to RNS.

Paul is an avid sports fan who enjoys coaching hockey and baseball. He is also a significant contributor to twitter and has led workshops in this area.




Helen Pereira-Raso

My teaching career began in 1999 in the public school system in Ontario. In 2006 I joined the faculty at BSS and today I am just over one year into a new role I am at Holy Trinity School (HTS). In my teaching career my experiences ranged from classroom teacher, to special education, student success teacher for at risk youth, coach, Model UN advisor among other clubs. There are two roles that have brought me the greatest growth and happiness in my career. My current role at HTS where I am able to imagine new possibilities for learning K-12 along with the operational side of my work. Additionally, my time at BSS as Lead Teacher: Curriculum Innovation (Grades 9-12) where working alongside teachers and students, I co-designed new ways of making learning meaningful. Both of these opportunities, have pushed me well outside my comfort zone allowing me to truly feel what it means to be inspired. I am currently on a leave from my PhD in Education where the focus of my dissertation is “innovative classroom practice.”


Barbara Winsor Piccini

Currently, I hold the position Head of Junior School at Trinity College School. I have been at TCS for 16 years. Previously, I have held the positions of Director of Studies at Kingsway College School, Grade 5 teacher at Crescent School, Director of Education at Sylvan Learning Centre, and math teacher at a high school in England.

My focus at TCS has been on creating an enriching learning environment in the Junior School that focuses on positive relationships, inquiry-based learning, creativity and developing attributes of the ‘habits of heart and mind for a life of purpose and service’.

I have been a member of three strategic planning committees at TCS and as a result of this, I am keenly interested in looking at the sustainability of independent education in the 21st century.




Michael Ruscitti

Michael Ruscitti is the Instructional Leader at Royal St. George's College. He has been an acting head of Middle School and Asst. Head of Academics in previous schools. His teaching career began in 1995 as a Math and Science teacher. For the next five years his practice spanned from Mexico to Alberta. In 2000 he moved to independent schools where he continued working in the classroom. Michael is passionate about differentiated learning models, best practice curriculum development and developing teacher improvement models. He has sat on IB and CESI evaluation committees, as well as presenting at several national and international conferences. He has hosted several professional development sessions for local school boards on boy's education and assessment practices. He is the proud father of three young girls.


Shailau Spivak

Junior School Principal
Hillfield Strathallan College

Shailau has over 18 years of experience in education. She completed her Bachelor’s degree in Spanish Language and Literature at The University of Western Ontario before completing a Graduate Diploma of Education at the University of Western Sydney, Australia. She then moved to California where she taught for 10 years. While in California, Shailau was responsible for opening a foreign language program at the elementary schools in her district as well as writing the curriculum.

Upon her return to Canada, Shailau joined HSC and is now in her seventh year in the Junior School. In those seven years, she earned her Master’s degree in Curriculum, Assessment and Instruction, and completed her diploma from the CAIS Leadership Institute, a program designed to develop leadership attributes amongst educators at independent schools across Canada. Shailau is currently the Principal of the Junior School at HSC.

Tina Alto

Tina has been in advancement for 20 years, 17 of which have been at Balmoral Hall School. She has participated in 4 CESI/CAIS school reviews and was referred by CAIS to conduct a review of the advancement department of The Study in Montreal. A past president of Manitoba Leave a Legacy (MBLAL) and former Vice President of CAISAP ( Canadian Association of Independent Schools Advancement Professionals), Tina now serves on the CAISAP Advisory committee and in January 2015 she was recognized with CAISAP’s Sam Heaman Award for leadership.

She has a background as a Marketing Consultant, specializing in sales, communications and training, but for the past 20 years has worked in the not-for-profit sector in Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia, primarily involved in multi-million dollar fundraising campaigns, public relations, communications and capacity-building. As part of the senior leadership team at St. George’s, she leads a team of professionals responsible for Alumni (Georgian) Relations, Fundraising, Donor Stewardship, e-Communications and Website development, as well as School marketing and communications. She is professionally accredited internationally as a Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) and serves on the Board of CAISAP (Canadian Association of Independent School Advancement Professionals) as the Chair of Mentorship.




Kelsey Edmunds

Sharon Klein

Ms. Sharon Klein, Head of School at St. George’s School of Montreal, is a lifelong learner who is passionate about education. She has a positive reputation for community-building, and is widely respected by her peers as a collaborative leader. Fully aligned with St. George’s mission and vision, Ms. Klein embraces inquiry and reflection in education. She is an advocate of progressive and research-based education, and is committed to whole-child approaches in rigorous learning environments. She strives to empower each individual student to become a passionate leader. In addition to being a truly inspiring educator, Ms. Klein is an athlete and coach whose interests include a wide diversity of sports.

Ms. Klein received her Bachelor of Education in 1984 from the University of Regina, and her Master of Arts–Educational Leadership in 2002 from San Diego State University. She began her career as a teacher and coach in 1984 in Saskatchewan, and then joined Queen Margaret’s School, in Duncan, BC, in 2003 as Athletic Director. She then became Deputy Head Student Life, Senior School Principal in 2005 and Deputy Head of Education in 2010, where she remained until taking on her new role at St. George’s on July 1, 2014. Ms. Klein has been on 2 CAIS Accreditation Teams and is a graduate of the CAIS Next Step Program, as well as the ISABC Prospective Head’s Program.




Jim LaPlante

Director of IT

Jim LaPlante currently in his 7th year as IT Director at Upper Canada College. He has been involved in education and technology for 21 years. He started his career in education as a Physics and Calculus teacher. As a young teacher, Jim was nominated for the Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence, as well as the Toronto Star and Toronto Sun Teacher of the Year Awards. Jim feels that, hey, it is an honour just to have been nominated. During his time as a teacher Jim implemented one of the first STEM integrated projects at the YCDSB, as well as the development of a senior engineering course. Jim was the technical lead on the Nelson Physics 12 textbook.

Jim has been computer consultant and Technology Coordinator at the YCDSB. Working closely with IBM to develop an online learning platform in the mid 90s, he led the learn@home online learning implementation at the YCDSB including the development, research and implementation of the online courses. Learn@home, implemented in 1998, was one of the first programs in North America to offer full credit online courses. Jim has been the lead facilitator of the Computers and Information Technology course (AQ) at OISE and at York University, teaching the F2F and pioneering the online versions of the courses. While at the Board, Jim worked on a team that developed the National Technology Innovation Award at The Learning Partnership.

Jim has worked as an IT Director at Havergal College and Upper Canada College. He was instrumental in the implementation of the k-12 1:1 program at UCC and works with very talented integrators who have ensured the success of the program. He is the Independent School Representative on the Apple Canada Vanguard team that is a Canadian think tank on the big picture impact and logistics of technology in our schools.

Over the last few years, Jim has been on two CAIS accreditation teams, Co-Chaired the CAIS IT Leadership Conference, as well as co-hosting the CAIS National Engagement Forums on 21st Century Classroom Design, School infrastructure and the Internet of Things, and the Evolution of 1:1 Programs in Independent Schools. Currently, Jim is working closely with the Director of Facilities at UCC to develop classrooms that are focussed on 21st century teaching and learning.


John Ligget

John Liggett joined The Country Day School as Head of School in 2011. He began his teaching career in the 1990s at Forest Hill Collegiate Institute in the Toronto District School Board, before moving into the independent school system. In between, John spent a few years in the private sector managing a confectionary manufacturing company.

Prior to coming to CDS, he worked at St. Michaels University School as Director of Academics where he played a key role in curriculum development and was at the forefront of developing and leading collaborative school-wide initiatives in the areas of curriculum planning, faculty evaluation, professional growth and student assessment. John was also pivotal in developing the Advanced Placement (AP) program at SMUS. Before moving out west, he spent four years at St. Clement’s School as Head of Social Science.
John has dedicated his career to education because he has a passion for engaging young people in the possibilities of the future. He believes that great schools exist, not only by maintaining strong academic standards, but also by broadening the sights of education, by meeting the needs of a variety of learners, and by engaging the whole student. Excellence takes many shapes!
John holds an Honours B.A. and a B.Ed. from York University, as well as an MBA from the Schulich School of Business. He and his wife Teresa live in Aurora and are proud CDS parents of Joshua (Class of 2015) and Aiden (Grade 7).

After working in the private sector, Jim spent the majority of his career in higher education in various financial and administrative roles gaining experience in not-for-profit budgeting and financial reporting, human resources management, facilities management, information technology, and food services and hospitality management. Jim joined the team at Montcrest School in 2011 as the Director of Finance.


Amalia Liogas

Amalia Liogas has a wealth of educational experience, both in the youth and adult sectors. She has been at The Study for 16 years, serving as IT specialist and, since 2008, IT Director. Amalia champions the innovation pillar of our Strategic Plan, both in her leadership in integrating IT in the kindergarten to grade 11 curricula as well as designing innovative classrooms. Besides her advocacy of 21 century learning skills, Amalia is also a strong advocate of community service. She has been the advisor of our Free the Children chapter since its inception in 2002, and works tirelessly for our sister school in Nicaragua, The Diria Institute. Amalia’s philosophy of education supports learning outside the classroom, and she has always provided leadership opportunities for students – take responsibility, lead and learn. A runner up in the 2010 Me to We / Canadian Living Activism Competition, she motivates students to do and be their best.




Sharon Magor

Barb brings a Bank-wide perspective to a new role. Prior to this appointment in November 2013, Barb held the positions of Executive Vice President, Global Wealth Management; Executive Vice President, Wealth Management, Canada; and Executive Vice President, Marketing, Sales & Service. She joined the Bank in 1982 and has held progressively senior positions in retail banking, credit cards, marketing, sales and service, and wealth management. Barb graduated from the University of Waterloo with an Honours degree in Environmental Studies, was the 2012 Alumni of the Year, and is also a graduate of the Queen's Executive Program. She sits on the boards of Bayview Glen School and the Humber River Hospital, as well as a variety of the Bank's internal subsidiary boards.

During the 18 years of employment with Meadowridge School, Patrick has taught Math, French, Information Technology, and Design. His current responsibilities include visioning the use of technology in education, supervision of the technology infrastructure and the implementation of technology in education. Philip Pierce

Mr. Pierce has been working in the information technology field for the past 18 years. Primarily, and most recently he was with FLIR Systems - an international high tech company focused on the security and emergency services markets. For 6 years prior to joining St. Margaret’s, Mr. Pierce held the post of Director of Engineering at FLIR, overseeing Software Engineering for FLIR’s Canadian software division. Prior to working at FLIR, Mr. Pierce worked at Raytheon Systems Canada in Air Traffic Management Systems. Alongside his work in the IT field, Mr. Pierce has worked extensively in media. He has produced over 400 commercial videos over the past 7 years for the digital marketplace. He also co-hosted a weekly Arts and Entertainment video segment from 2010-12 that was broadcast and distributed by Tourism Victoria and remains very active in Victoria’s arts community. Mr. Pierce has a genuine passion for both technology and communication. He hopes that his experience in both areas will result in a meaningful and beneficial contribution to the school. Mr. Pierce’s vision is to expose the students and teachers to technology in new ways, and to assist them in understanding new tools that will be of great value to them in their academic and professional careers.



Paul Prieur

Paul is the Director of Admissions & Marketing at St. John’s-Ravenscourt School in Winnipeg. He began his teaching career in 1994 working for the Franco-Manitoban School Division. He taught French, Math and Science in Grades 9 and 10. He also worked with the Manitoba Ministry of Education in the development the new high school Math curriculum (grades 9 to 12) and the Grade 9 Provincial Math Exam. In 2000, he moved to Mexico and taught Middle School Math and was Head of the Math Department at the American School Foundation of Mexico City. He then moved to College Esther-Blondin, in St. Jacques, QC. where he was Director of Student Services. In 2008, he joined Cirque du Soleil as an on tour teacher and eventually was promoted to Tour Services Director. He has been at SJR since 2012.


Jason Rogers

Jason Rogers is currently the Headmaster of Rundle College in Calgary, Alberta. Rundle College is a preK-12 coeducational day school that boasts over 1000 students and 156 faculty. Rundle College has 3 regular education campuses and is unique as it has one specialized campus named Rundle Academy which is solely for students with learning disabilities.

Prior to taking on the headship at Rundle College, Jason has served as classroom teacher, director of admissions, assistant principal and principal within the Rundle College community. He has also chaired Rundle College’s steering committees ranging from technology to professional development. Prior to moving to Calgary, Jason’s initial teaching experience was at an inner city school in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. It was in Saskatoon where he learned that you cannot reach a student until you have built a trusting relationship in a safe and caring environment first.

Jason has a Masters Degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Calgary and recently received his diploma in Independent School Leadership from Canadian Accredited Independent Schools (CAIS).

Outside of school, Jason has a love of family, travel, writing and the outdoors. Jason has published articles on topics such as universal design for learning, creative study skills and the art of public speaking among other topics. He has also had the opportunity to present to teachers, administration and parents in most Canadian provinces. In spite of growing up in Saskatchewan and cheering for the Roughriders his whole life, Jason and his wife have now made Calgary home and wear red to most local sporting events.

Christopher Shannon

Christopher Shannon is an experienced Head of two CAIS schools: LCC - Lower Canada College (2005-today) and Stanstead College (1999-2005). At both schools, Chris has overseen a significant degree of change management. During his 10-year tenure at LCC Chris has overseen two capital campaigns that have raised $30 million for the construction of an Arena/Athletic Centre, a modern Arts Centre, and endowed funds for bursaries and scholarships. In addition, program enhancements have fortified faculty growth, bilingualism, IT/Media integration, integration of diverse learners, a strong focus on internationalism, and the adoption of the IB Diploma programme in Grades 11 & 12. Ms. Sumerlus has also served on the boards of a variety of Jewish community organizations. Currently, Ms. Sumerlus is Head of School at Robbins Hebrew Academy in Toronto. Dr. Zederayko has earned Bachelor’s degrees in Microbiology and Education, and a Master’s and Doctorate (Ed. D) in Educational Leadership. Completing his 28th year in education he has served in four independent schools across three provinces (Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario), Dr. Zederayko keenly supports the ongoing development of strong independent schools across Canada and internationally. He has served as the Chair of the Governance Committee of the Conference of Independent Schools of Ontario and been a Visiting Committee member for 9 Canadian Accredited Independent Schools (CAIS) accreditation teams in a variety of independent schools across Canada.

He has just completed a four year term as the Chair of the Board of the Canadian Council of Montessori Administrators, which works to accredit, promote and support authentic Montessori schools.

As a Director of Junior High (Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School) and then as a Head of School in three subsequent schools(The Glenfir School, Kingsway College School and TMS School), he has enjoyed the opportunity to learn about and contribute to the development of students, colleagues, parents, alumni, and schools overall.
