To prepare aspiring leaders, the Leadership Praxis was developed based upon the Ontario Leadership Framework, the CAIS Accreditation Standards and input from CAIS Heads and Chairs. The Praxis has guided the restructure of the Leadership Institute so that it is intentional, comprehensive and better organized to meet individual needs.
The Leadership Institute provides participants with a balance of content across school functions, an outline of important competencies and key dispositions that enable leaders to provide inspiration and direction to school improvement in Canadian independent schools.
The new Diploma Program including the five (5) day CAIS Foundations for School Leadership Program: Designing a Practice could be completed in a minimum of three (3) years as shown in the table below. The program must be completed within five (5) years to earn the Diploma. Requests for extension for financial or compassionate reasons can be made to the CAIS Executive Director.
Participants can apply for one module equivalence for graduate course work at a recognized university or an Additional Qualification/Principal’s Additional Qualification course. Applications to the Executive Director must include: a description of the content and time in course, evidence of completion and the comparable CAIS module.
As of Spring 2021, LI program registrations will be offered online in the Summer and Fall. Plans for future LI programs will be made when we know participants can travel and gather safely. We hope that the LI program offered in the Summer will be in person, but will likely continue to offer the Fall and Spring programs online. This will reduce the time, travel commitment and cost required during the school year.
Participants need not follow a specific sequence in taking Diploma modules. Modules may require participants to complete: a reading; gathering information through resources or short interview; a reflective piece of writing or a self-assessment. Facilitators will advise participants about 3-4 weeks prior to the session of any pre-work.
All Diploma participants (who start the Diploma Program in 2021) are expected to complete the six (6) required modules:
Education Program Foundation* formerly Academic Administration (Leadership organization, schedule, school organization, learning environment, resources)
Child Safety and Protection (anti-bullying, standards and boundaries, supervision, risk, school design, duty to report)
Asterisked (*) modules are required modules from the previous LI Diploma program.
Four additional modules from any category are required to complete the Diploma. As part of the CAIS Foundations for School Leadership Program: Designing a Practice, participants will be asked a series of questions that will help guide their choices. We recommend that participants take modules in a 2:1 ratio during the summer to maximize flexibility of module choice in the Fall and Spring sessions as not all modules are offered in each session.
Upon registration an automatic no-reply confirmation email is sent to you if you’ve indicated this in the registration form. Keep these as a record of your course and your method of payment. Should you have any questions, contact Tracey Nolan.
Yes. Circumstances like the pandemic or the increased attention paid to pluralism arise that create a need for different modules. We strive to be nimble and responsive to school needs. We also take feedback as we improve or change our offerings.
