Strengthen Your School Leadership

CAIS values the constant and deliberate quest for excellence, and we recognize the vital leadership role that governors play, in partnership with Heads, in the success of our schools. We want all of our schools to have strong Heads who focus on supporting the students of the present, but we also want strong Boards that focus on supporting the students of the future.

The Governance Guide include new learning on a number of areas, including Human Resources, Risk Management, Head Transitions, and Consent Agendas.

CAIS members and non-members can purchase a hard copy here. And CAIS members can also view the full PDF in CAIS Connect here.

Summer Institutes

Leadership Institute

We are thrilled to welcome 119 participants and 15 expert facilitators to the CAIS Summer Leadership Institute in Victoria. Please review the CAIS Welcome letter from Patti MacDonald that includes the event schedule; a sign up for a shuttle bus from and to airport on Monday, July 2 and Friday, July 6, respectively; the St.Michaels University School Senior School Admissions View Book and especially the 2018 Summer Institutes Participant Information Reference which provides detailed information about your stay in Victoria.

All those who specifically requested a single room have been accommodated as have those who have requested specific roommates. Those who did not specify either have been paired as much as possible, promising a great opportunity to connect with a new colleague. All pre-work has been distributed where applicable and your facilitators are looking forward to meeting you.

The Summer Institute is a time to celebrate learning about different aspects of independent school leadership and a time to build a network of relationships with educators from across Canada. Hospitality suites are organized for this purpose on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. Summer LI participants have a diverse range of leadership experience and we hope you will be inspired by insights from New Heads, Chris White from Kempenfelt Bay School and Karen Fougere, Acting Head at Armbrae Academy on Tuesday night. On Thursday night we will recognize our graduating LI participants and honour two dedicated and long-serving Heads, Martha Perry from St. Clement's School and Tam Matthews from West Point Gray Academy.

In striving to be less environmentally impactful this year, we are not providing hard copy binders and would ask you to bring a water bottle for hydration. Thanks for your understanding.

Next Step Program

We will welcome 10 participants to our Next Step program. Participants should have received additional information about an assessment from Val Cambre. In addition to Val, our experienced facilitators, David Hadden, David Robertson and Barry Wright from Brock University have an intense and rewarding experience that will help you develop a deep understanding of independent school leadership and your unique strengths. The summer institute kicks off a year long experience for our 4th cohort that will culminate in July 2019.
