Island Pacific School

Island Pacific School focuses exclusively on meeting the educational needs of middle school students. Located on beautiful Bowen Island, British Columbia, the school was founded in 1995 as an International Baccalaureate candidate school for students in Grades 6-9.

Island Pacific believes that great middle schools cultivate an intellectual awakening in adolescents at a time in their lives when they are most open to ideas about curriculum, themselves, and the world around them. As such, classroom learning is extended beyond the walls of the school by taking students on hiking, snowshoeing, and ocean kayaking expeditions. These co-curricular experiences, combined with cultural excursions to museums and galleries, compliment an enriched academic program at all grades.

Island Pacific School encourages young people to be empowered and respectfully challenging of ideas. In this way, students understand what it means to be an individual, as they learn to respect difference in a school culture that values wisdom, courage, and integrity.

AISNE Survey on the Impact of the Financial Crisis

International Studies Association (ISANET)  http://www.isanet.org/ recently sent some survey results to CAIS. ISANET shared two surveys that they ran late last year; one assessed the Effects of the Financial Crisis from the perspective of School Heads, and the other reviewed some data regarding Development practices within schools.

In late 2008, after surveying AISNE School Heads in the United States, it was found that 49% of the Heads rated the current financial crisis a 3-4 on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being very severe. The crisis was rated a 6 or above by 14% of the Heads.

Of the schools surveyed, 83% reported that their school had been affected by the crisis. With the top effects listed being:

  • Anxiety among faculty and staff
  • Increased requests for financial assistance: new and returning families
  • Reduction in annual fund donations
  • Anxiety among parents
  • Reduced investment income to operating budget

To read more about the Financial Crisis Effects Survey please see the attachment below.

The AISNET Development survey also yielded some interesting statistics, one being that of the 75 respondents, 72% reported that their school would be working to "go green", or greener this year. On the topic of fundraising, 30% responded that they would be modifying their approach this year.

The Development Survey results can be found here: http://www.aisne.org/miscpage.asp?mp=812

2009 Governor General's Awards for Excellence in Teaching Canadian History

Canada’s National History Society is pleased to announce a call for nominations for the 14th Governor General’s Awards for Excellence in Teaching Canadian History. We urge History and Social Studies educators to submit their unique teaching approaches to the program.

The 2008 recipients hailed from British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, and Quebec. Their teaching strategies were as diverse as they were innovative, from a two year-long effort to organize a 5100 kilometre pilgrimage from Quebec to the WW2 Battlefields of France; the creation of memorial pieces and personal tributes to Hong Kong and WWII veterans; an historical documentary produced by 10-year olds; aboriginal sharing circles, a re-staging of the 1927 Diamond Jubilee celebration of Confederation; and a classroom “history table” that has students build a pioneer settlement.
Visit http://www.historysociety.ca/gga.asp?subsection=pro for details.

Encourage teachers in your region to submit their teaching strategies. The rewards are great!

Six Recipients are Awarded $2,500, a medal and a trip for two to attend the Awards festivities and official ceremony with Her Excellency, the Right Honourable Michäelle Jean, Governor General of Canada.

Schools share in the winnings; an additional $1,000 is awarded to the recipients' schools.

All approaches are welcome. Canada is rich in stories and there are countless ways to tell them. Elementary, middle, and senior teachers are welcome to share their approaches. Teachers can present their work individually, as a group, or be nominated by a student, parent or colleague.

Deadline for Submissions: April 30, 2009

Summer School Programs at Ashbury College

This year Ashbury College is proud to offer a redesigned summer program during June, July and August 2009. Ashbury students, and students from the broader community, are being offered a summer program that helps them effectively manage the four-year secondary-school requirements.

The summer program is an opportunity for students to reach ahead, explore new areas of study, build new skills and have fun. It gives students a chance to build flexibility into their regular course of study and reduce pressure during the school year.

It is also a great opportunity for other students to live the Ashbury experience. The same high-quality classes, and personal interaction with Ashbury faculty, is offered during the summer as the regular school year.

Some of the academic programs being offered this summer are:

-Grade 9 Geography and Core French
-Grade 10 History, Careers and Civics, and Math
-Grade 11 Accounting, Chemistry, Physics, and an introduction to Film (1/2 credit)
-Grade 12 Data Management and Advanced Functions

Also offered: day camps, an Insight Quest for Teens program, SAT Prep, and a grade 10 French credit in Paris.

For further information regarding the Ashbury summer experience please see http://summer.ashbury.ca, or contact:
